Cinematographer Hiroki Shioya follows a weary Tokyo commuter whose encounter with an elderly man changes how he sees a familiar world.
REFRAME uses AI-assisted filmmaking for a small human story: a change in attention that makes everyday life look different.
In Hiroki Shioya’s REFRAME, a weary Tokyo commuter encounters an elderly man and begins noticing the colour, kindness and quiet beauty already around him. The premise asks for a shift in attention: the same city, experienced differently.
Shioya is a cinematographer whose professional work spans films, commercials and music videos. He released the five-minute, 32-second short through his EN FILM. channel on September 8 as a Higgsfield Global Film Festival submission. Renewed community discussion on October 6 brought the film back into view.
His release notes say all video material was generated within Higgsfield Cinema Studio, without external image or video references, and that some audio was created with Adobe Firefly. In a production account reproduced by MetaFilter, Shioya describes testing, generation, editing, sound work and colour finishing. The specific underlying image and video model stack is undisclosed.
A drama about noticing other people depends on small choices: where attention settles, how long a reaction lasts and when an expression changes. In the production account, Shioya identifies eye movement, breathing and reaction timing as difficult parts of making generated performances feel human.
That is an interesting challenge for a cinematographer. The knowledge brought to the project includes how to direct a viewer’s attention and how to let a moment unfold, alongside the ability to generate its images.
There is something inviting about an AI film that asks us to look more closely at an ordinary day. Shioya has chosen a commuter, a stranger and a familiar city as the ingredients for a change in perspective.
For creators, that makes REFRAME an interesting film to spend time with. The subject is everyday attention, and the production story is a filmmaker bringing his judgement about images and performance to a different way of making them.
Higgsfield Cinema Studio generated all video material; some audio used Adobe Firefly. Specific underlying image/video model stack undisclosed. Testing, editing, sound work and colour finishing described in the filmmaker account.
