Alexey Utkin's dystopian short imagines a city where AI controls society and a social-media audience controls one man's choices. Then a blind date threatens to change everything.
What happens when someone becomes so accustomed to letting an audience make decisions that he forgets how to make one for himself? That is the question behind Chosen by You, a 13-minute science-fiction short written and directed by Alexey Utkin. Combining AI-generated visuals with conventional editing, the film explores popularity, manipulation and the cost of doing the right thing.
Zeyn appears to have the perfect life.
He is a successful influencer living in a technologically advanced city governed by an AI system called CIVIS. His followers vote on his everyday decisions, shaping everything from his relationships to his behavior.
Being watched is part of his identity. So is being liked.
Then a blind date introduces him to a different side of his world.
The encounter exposes the human cost of the supposedly perfect society surrounding him. Suddenly, the choices Zeyn once treated as entertainment carry consequences far beyond his audience's approval.
He must decide whether to challenge the system that made him successful.
The irony is that even when Zeyn recognizes something is wrong, he remains accustomed to letting other people decide what happens next.
Chosen by You is the self-described debut film of Utkin, a graduate of the Russian State University of Cinematography (VGIK) who also works in digital products.
Utkin wrote and directed the film using AI-generated visuals, including Seedance, with final editing in Adobe Premiere Pro. The precise model version and other production tools have not yet been disclosed.
AI science fiction often imagines machines taking control of humanity. Chosen by You explores something more personal.
Its central character has surrendered much of his independence willingly. Technology governs the city, but his audience has become another authority over his life.
For independent filmmakers, AI-assisted production offers a way to create ambitious fictional worlds without conventional science-fiction budgets. The challenge is turning those images into a story worth watching.
AI governs the society in which Zeyn lives.
His followers vote on decisions that should be personal.
The encounter reveals the cost of his privileged world.
Zeyn must confront the difference between popularity and responsibility.
Zeyn has an audience willing to choose almost anything for him. What he may need most is the courage to choose for himself.
The most interesting idea in Chosen by You is a very human one.
Zeyn lives among powerful technology, but his central weakness is his willingness to surrender responsibility for his decisions.
That gives Utkin a promising foundation for AI-assisted science fiction. The technology helps build the world, while a recognizable human conflict gives the story its purpose.
It is the kind of creator-led filmmaking VEYR wants to encourage.
