Studios are starting to look for filmmakers who already know AI production tools, while schools such as NYU, USC and others are adding those tools to creative training.
What Happened
Semafor reports that film studios are increasingly asking where they can find people who already know how to use AI filmmaking tools, rather than training every team from scratch. Runway CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela told Semafor that this question is becoming common among studios. Runway says it launched an AI filmmaking course at NYU in 2024 and has expanded access to its tools across NYU Tisch programs, while similar training is now appearing at schools including USC, RISD, MIT and Harvard. Google is also running Flow-focused filmmaker training.
Why It Matters
That makes film schools an early signal for which AI workflows may become normal production skills. AI fluency is not yet a universal hiring requirement, but students are beginning to enter the industry with hands-on experience using generative video and related tools before they reach a studio.
